Mainly since the second half of the 19th century up to this day we have address books. The frame is almost the same. People were (and they still are) separated aplhabeticaly, in virtue of their occupation or dwelling place.

For example:

the Prague Address Book 1937-38, page # 1258
Karel Sehnal, *, zast., m. Eleanora, Vrsovice, Okrouhla 57, t 71883

it means:
* = house-possessor
zast. = zastupce = exponent
m. = manzelka = wife
Vrsovice = Prague district
Okrouhla 57 = Okrouhla street, the house # 57
t = telefon = phone
